Rhetorical Analysis

The argument of my part 1 phase three assignment is that all English is perfect English no matter what way you speak, where you come from, or how you were raised. The intended audience for this meme is people that speak more than one language and have an accent. The specific issue is that people may feel some type of way from speaking with an accent and may shy away from speaking because they fear getting made fun of. The genre that I used to show this issue was a meme. I felt that portraying this issue via meme was the best course of action because it may reach more people.

One strategy used in the meme was depicting that the guy has two choices in how to pronounce the word three and that neither choice was necessarily wrong it was just up to him and how he wanted to pronounce it. This is a use of Pathos because many people have different pronunciations for certain words and society or even their own teachers have started to teach them that there is only one correct way to pronounce something or write something. Many people shy away from being themselves when it comes to speaking the way they want because of their previous trauma or things that may have happened to them.

The use of imagery in the meme is important because we can see that the guy was feeling anxious about which one was the correct choice to say. This is caused because of the way society has caused people to think that there is only one way to say something when every way you say something is fine. The use of imagery here is important because we can see the cartoon character beginning to question himself and what decision to make that would satisfy those around him. Although this is wrong many people make linguistic decisions based on this thought because of the situation many people are placed in, they start considering what kinds of words and pronunciations would make them sound more sophisticated or just fit in with the people around them. In the end, it does not matter what way you pronounce words, all that matters is being true to yourself and saying things that are true to you.
